REALLY - No Way Would A 1st Grader Do THAT!

Let me tell you, nothing suprises me anymore.......
Background: I work at North Star Academy, K-9 Charter School in Bluffdale Utah, 1.2 miles from my current residence.
I am currently a TA in the 1st grade, In previous years I have worked in Kindergarten and 1st Grade. So the things our little ones of today say or do, Don't seem to surprise me much anymore, until this week.....
As many of you know, I LOVE KIDS! I always have and after this week I always will! ( But a little more cautious, I believe)

READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH THERE ARE 2 STORIES OF EQUAL CRAZINESS

1ST Setting: Monday, January 25th, Cold Winter Day in Utah @ 12:45pm Lunch Recess
2nd grade boy comes sobbing to myself and another aide and is bleeding from his nose. (Common occurance amoung boys at school, playing on ice and snow and running around...) The other aide comes to the side of the crying boy and asks what has happened - (this is where I will put in Made-up names to protect the innocent or not so innocent)

TA: Johnny what happened? are you OK?
Johnny: No- Amy punched me in the nose. (Sobbing and bleeding)
TA: Lets go to the office - sidebar- Mrs Alice will you go get Amy and figure out what happened?
Mrs Alice: Gladly!! (Thinking as I am looking; Johnny is one of the larger 2nd grade boys and Amy,by-far, is the smallest 1st grade girl in stature - A David and Goliath scenario)
(Looking around playground and spotting AMY)
Mrs. Alice: Amy Come over here, I need to talk to you!!!
(Amy slowly, I mean snail like coming across the playground to Mrs. Alice with 3 little shadows following her)
Mrs. Alice: Now Amy, Would you like to tell me your side of the story? (mind you I didn't even tell her what I was talking about or who I was inquiring about, yet I knew she was completely aware - This is not a huge suprise to Mrs. Alice)
Amy: Well Johnny and his friends are the boys who always try to hurt us and chase us.
Mrs. Alice: Did he hit you or touch you today?
Amy: No
Mrs Alice: Did he hit you or hurt you any other day?
Amy: No
Mrs Alice: Did you actually punch Johnny in the Nose?
Amy: Yes
Mrs. Alice: Why would you do that?
Amy: Because he was going to hurt us.
Mrs. Alice: What made you think he was going to hurt you?
Amy: He and his friends always bother us and go near us and won;t leave us alone.
Mrs Alice: Amy, you have never come to me before and told me he is bullying you or bothering you or trying to hurt you, Why?
Amy: (No Answer - Straight faced stare - literally through my body - No emotion on this childs face at ALL)
Mrs Alice: OK, let's go to the Principal's office. (Amy walks along side Mrs. Alice and gives no emotion - at this point most kids start to sniffle and cry or confess cause they are scared - NO, not Amy ( I think she is SATAN) - As we are walking I make the following comments; Amy, I could understand you defending yourself if you were getting hurt, and if you came and told me what was going on, but this is not acceptable. I don't know what you are allowed to do at your house, but at school we do not ever Punch another student or person, for that matter, in the nose or anywhere - especially on their BIRTHDAY!!!! (Yes, you read right, It was Johnny's 8th Birthday)

Happy Freaking Birthday to you, hope you enjoy that Bloody Nose and Black eye!

(Conclusion: Amy shows no remorse, no emotion and parents are out of town for 10 days in Hawaii, and Grandma has to come in and deal with the situation and SATAN; She gets 4 days Detention in the office during recess and Lunch and doesn't care) Where did we go wrong?

2nd Setting: Wednesday, January 27th, 1st grade classroom, NSA. Mrs Alice reads to the kids daily at 11:45 am to 12:10 pm "Junie B. Jones" or the Magic Treehouse. I keep my phone in my pocket or, in this case, on the white board shelf to keep time before I need to wrap it up and take the kids down to lunch.

12:10pm Mrs Alice take the 1st graders to to the lunch room for lunch and leaves the main teacher behind in the classroom
12:25pm Teacher goes to leave the classroom and notice Mrs Alice has left her phone on the white board shelf and wonders if she should pick it up and put it somewhere and decides to leave it there cause Mrs. Alice will probably come looking it for it momentarily.
12:50pm Mrs Alice and students enter classroom after lunch recess, Mrs Alice starts retrieving her personal items when a voice a student says to her,
STUDENT(let's call her Jane): Mrs. Alice, don't forget your phone.
So immediately Mrs Alice turns to the White board to retrieve her cell phone, and lo and behold it is not there...(Hence the mystery of the stolen phone...)
Mrs Alice: Jane, did you pick up my phone?
Jane: No Mrs Alice, but I saw it on the white board.
Mrs Alice: Jane did you see anyone touch mrs Alice's phone?
Jane: No.
At this point Mrs Alice and the 1st grade teacher attempt to locate the red cell phone, looking in all purses, coats, drawers, book shelves, asking all students, having all student take out there Tote Trays, asking over and over if anyone has seen the missing red cell phone. Mean while Mrs Alice goes to the office checks lost and found asks all the office staff and reports that if anyone turns it in, that it is hers. I found it very odd that this student would remind me not to forget to retrieve my phone and acted very mysterious with another student we shall call Joan.
So Alice takes off for the day, she is now off the clock and goes home to explain her plight to her husband at work. Through out the night I figured it may show up, but if it didn't I would be fine without the immediate access that my children have to me....
Fast forward to Thursday January 28th 8:25 am; Mrs Alice enters 1st grade where upon arrival many student ask about the missing red phone and to my shagrin I explain that it had not yet been returned. Meanwhile, The 1st grade teacher explains that she received a call from my cell phone the evening prior at 6:50pm, The mystery continues...
8:28am: Jane comes into class with a smile and says "Mrs Alice, Look I found your phone!"
Mrs Alice: Jane honey ar you sure you did not take my phone home with you?
Jane: No I found it out by the trash can
Mrs Alice: Which trash can?
Jane: The one down the hall, it was behind it.
Mrs Alice: Are you positive that is where it was Jane, because someone called the Teacher last night from that cell phone (The last # that I had called from the red cell phone was my teachers cell phone, so anyone could press talk 2 times and it will call back the last # dialed)
Jane: No, I found it by the trash.
Mrs Alice: Ok, thank you for giving me my phone back.
[ The stories did not match up - So Mrs Alice explained to the teacher and the Vice principal that a little investigation needed to happen] To make a long story shorter; Jane and Joan were interviewed by Teacher, Vice Principal and the story went as follows;
Jane: I was walking into school and I saw a boy drop something out of his coat into the ice melt bucket by the front doorway and I thought to my self that sounds like something broke, I wander if it is Mrs. Alice's phone, so I looked down in the bucket and there it was so I brought it to Mrs. Alice. She continued on to tell what type of coat the boy was wearing and she thought she could identify him in the 2nd grade...Luckily she did not accomplish this and no innocent 2nd grade boy was blamed. (Where do they come up with these things?)

Being the investigator that I am, I was thinking as I was leaving work today that I should check the Call log on my red cell phone, as low and behold 2 calls were made at 6:49pm to voicemail (automatic if you have any messages and press the green call button) & 6:50 pm to my home; which is the #2 speed dial on my cell phone and the beginning number of most Riverton Phone numbers, ie... 254-xxxx and the INFAMOUS SMOKING GUN, a phone call was made from the red cell phone at 12:38pm (recess time) to an unknown number. So I called that # and received an answering machine with a familiar ladies voice. So with my investigative nature I called NSA and asked them to look up the phone # and tell me who it belonged to and would you believe it, IT WAS JANES HOME! Caught YA!
- To wrap this up, Jane and Jane's parents came into the school to meet with the Vice Principal and come to find out that we had a real CLEPTO on our hands, she wanted to have a school like room in her play room and was bringing things home each day in her backpack to put in her play room. Guess what "Teacher" we found those missing rulers and bell you were looking for.

REALLY PEOPLE WHAT ARE WE TEACHING OR NOT TEACHING OUR KIDS THESE DAYS!
Little miss Jane had no remorse, showed no emotion and thought that being cute and young it would not be any big deal, She will serve 1 week recess detention and have to clean tables at lunch - What's up with that - Suspend the little Fart....Needless to say I was really upset and Angry and I feel bad for all those that crossed my path today!

That bloody nose story is funny to me because Bryn came home and told me that "Johnny" got punched in the nose and it was bleeding. I asked her if she actually saw someone punch him. She said no, so I told her she shouldn't believe everything she hears. And that kids can get bloody noses for lots of reasons besides getting punched. I really didn't think that that would happen at school! And a 1st grade girl! Surprising, but I bet my Dare could bloody a kid's nose!

Oh man! The second story is even worse. Glad you got your phone back.

I'm sorry alice.... really I do wonder a lot of times what we are raising these days... I had a students jazz shoes get stolen last year, when I looked in everyones shoes in the class I found them, the best part is that the girl who lost them had put her name inside them, her name had been crossed out and the clepto's name written over it... funny thing was it looked like the moms handwritting not the little girls...We teach through example so??? What are we teaching are kids?

At least at that age they are still cute. Try teaching jr. high. I had a sub last Friday and 3 boys broke my cabinet door right off. Hinges out of the wall. Guess what they got??? One day ISS. At least your school exhibits some punishment to fit the crime. I keep telling myself that I love teaching but so far it's not working.....

Hope your family is well. Time for BASEBALL!!!
